One of the most common questions we get is: "How many totes do I actually need?" The honest answer is: slightly more than you think. Here's a practical breakdown by space size.

The Golden Rule: Size Up, Not Down

It's always better to have a few extra empty totes than to run out mid-pack. Unused totes cost you nothing extra — but scrambling for more boxes on move day is stressful. When in doubt, go one package size up.

Studio / Dorm Room — 20 Totes

The Studio package is ideal for:

  • IU dorm rooms (single or double)
  • Studio apartments
  • Single rooms in a shared house
  • Small storage unit cleanouts

20 totes covers the essentials: clothes, books, kitchen items, and decor for a small space. If you're a collector or have a lot of books/vinyl/gear, consider the 1-bedroom package.

1-Bedroom Apartment — 30 Totes

The 1-Bedroom package works well for:

  • Standard 1-bedroom apartments
  • Junior 1-bedrooms with a separate living area
  • Two people moving out of a shared apartment together

2-Bedroom Home or Apartment — 40 Totes

The most popular package. Works for:

  • 2-bedroom apartments and condos
  • Smaller 2-bedroom houses
  • Couples or roommates with combined households

3-Bedroom Home — 50 Totes

The 3-Bedroom package is built for larger moves:

  • 3-bedroom houses with full living and dining rooms
  • Families moving to or within Bloomington
  • Households with a garage or significant outdoor storage

Things That Use More Totes Than You Expect

  • Books and records — heavy and need smaller, dedicated containers
  • Kitchen — pots, pans, appliances, and pantry items add up fast
  • Closets — folded clothes take less space than hanging, but the volume is surprising
  • Kids' rooms — toys, books, gear; generally equivalent to an extra half-room
