Welcome to Indiana University — and congratulations on one of the best moves you'll ever make. Moving into a dorm or off-campus apartment for the first time is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Here's what you need to know.
IU Move-In Dates
Residence hall move-in typically begins in late July or early August for summer programs and incoming freshmen, with the main wave happening the week before fall semester starts. Off-campus apartments generally allow move-in starting August 1st. Check your specific housing assignment for exact dates and assigned time windows — many halls assign specific slots to reduce congestion.
What to Bring (and What Not To)
Standard dorm rooms are small — typically around 180–200 sq ft shared between two people. Essentials include:
- Bedding (Twin XL for most IU dorms)
- A shower caddy, flip-flops, and towels
- A power strip with surge protector
- Desk lamp and school supplies
- Mini fridge and microwave (check your hall's policy)
Leave behind: full-size furniture, candles, anything with an open heating element, and way too many clothes (you have limited closet space).
Why Plastic Totes Beat Cardboard for Dorm Moves
Cardboard boxes collapse under weight, fall apart in the rain, and have to be broken down and recycled after move-in. Plastic totes with snap-lock lids stack perfectly, hold up to 65 lbs, and since we pick them up when you're done — you don't have to figure out where to put the boxes afterward.
For most students, the Studio package (20 totes) covers a standard dorm move comfortably. Off-campus apartments typically need a 1-bedroom or 2-bedroom package.
Parking and Elevator Tips
- Many residence halls have assigned move-in time windows — don't skip yours, the lots fill up quickly
- Reserve elevator time in advance if your hall requires it (check with your RA or housing office)
- The moving dolly included with your tote package is a game-changer for heavy loads — no multiple trips from the car to the elevator
Off-Campus? Here's What's Different
If you're moving into an off-campus apartment near campus — Kirkwood Ave, 10th Street, College Mall Road — the process is more flexible. You can typically pick any move-in date after the lease start. Just book your totes for your chosen delivery date and we'll be there.
Good luck with move-in — and go Hoosiers! 🎓
